Hans Gustav Adolf Gross was born December 26, 1847, and is heralded as the father of criminalistics, applying science to the practices of crime investigation and law. He spent time as a magistrate, judge, and as a professor in several colleges. In 1891, he published his work Handbuch fur Untersuchungsricter als System Der Kriminalistik, released with the English title Criminal Investigation, which describes the theoretic foundation of as well as coins the term Criminalistics, which can be described as the application of science to criminal investigation and law.
